Muvendan’s residence is a private residential project, nestled within the neighbourhood of KK Nagar, Chennai. The design brief for the house had many memories attached from the client’s side. Now evolving over time, they wanted to experience contemporary modulations in the same space by renovating the facade design with simple, minimal and elegant.

Placed in a rectangular plot, the project makes the most of it by using a contemporary built form with well-planned zoning. Once entering the site, the visitor is welcomed to a larger volume where all the common spaces with parking facilities are dynamically knit into one with an elongated water body by the entrance. The double-height area facilitates a vertical spatial connection, providing visual communication and interaction between the two-floor planes. Designed with recreational activities such as a gym, home theatre and a swimming pool with lawn space crowns the residence. A perfect space for family gatherings, the Dining and Living areas are thoughtfully connected by a courtyard, encouraging quality family time and fostering a warm atmosphere for bonding and a puja space for moments of reflection and prayer.

The need for an own office resulted in the renovation of a 600 sq ft space in Shenoy Nagar. We transformed a 28-year-old 2BHK into an open-plan space merging living and work areas. Featuring reclaimed teak and pillai maruthu wood furniture, the office embraces natural light, greenery, and rustic elements like live edge wood tables and leather finish green kota stone, enhanced by black and white travel photos and indoor plants for a vibrant atmosphere.

This 250 sq ft room was transformed from unused space into a functional office meeting area, focusing on light, pleasant colors due to the lack of windows. Featuring a white terrazzo slab floor with amber glass chips, acoustic fabric panels behind the table, and fluted panels on the TV wall, the design creates a calming and peaceful workspace that meets client needs effectively.

Located in the town of Thanjavur, a private residence is designed to optimise the available space, lots of privacy and green pockets, and features simple volumes, functionality and spatiality. Understanding the client’s design brief provided the overall functionality of core spaces within the house. The ground floor is dedicated primarily to parking and the guest bedroom. On the first floor, the family room was planned with a balcony on the east side allowing maximum lighting and ventilation for the space. This balcony would act as a buffer from the habitable space and exterior area. The kitchen with a double-height dining covering with a pergola and glass on top allows natural lighting through the space.

The home tries to celebrate this achievement with simple minimal volumes, different zones of privacy, a courtyard & a small plunge pool on the ground floor. The client’s brief expressed the desire for a modern house having a pool and courtyard. The house is designed as a seamless extension of the natural landscape, enhanced with a sustainable living environment. The courtyard is positioned with maximum natural light and ventilation. To maintain the privacy of family members while also facilitating natural ventilation in the house, the courtyard becomes the point of convergence. With a play of levels around it, the courtyard is sunken to avoid the backsplash of water into adjacent spaces during monsoons. The formal and informal areas of the house, though visually connected, are distinctly separated and placed at the opposite ends of a central corridor.

Located in Shenoy Nagar, Chennai. The project comes from the need to design a chocolate factory’s facade while respecting the existing building. The design of the chocolate factory was inspired by Chocolate in its Molten Form, used as a concept to derive the shape of the factory facade. This design approach is enhanced by adding a Metal sheet with perforation allowing maximum lighting and ventilation through the space. Each material colour of the project is matched to the concept, in such a way that it becomes the guide of the project.

This farmhouse sits on a site of 1.4 acres positioned at the corner of the property, the house boasts a sprawling garden that envelops its entirety, immersing in the beauty of nature. The client mostly resides during weekends, came up with the requirements of having a 4-bed house with a beautiful view and allowing natural light and ventilation all over the spaces. Once entering the house, the visitor is welcomed to a larger verandah space. The main design element of this remarkable farmhouse is the courtyard at its centre facing the landscape with a waterbody.

The residence is nestled in the serene neighbourhood of VOC Nagar. This 2,800 square feet home opens up into a light-filled double-height courtyard with a bay window, making it interactive over the spaces. The home features passive cooling techniques and also ensures it is well-lit-naturally, throughout the day. The strategic location of the courtyard renders its association throughout the entirety of this house. The living, dining and bedroom overlooks the courtyard at different levels.

A well-known spiritual centre designed with a multipurpose meditation hall to conduct its teaching programs and community gatherings. The hostel has been renovated into a meditation centre designed without losing the functionality of the space with the grand entry to the height entrance arch. The meditation centre has been planned around its nucleus: the courtyard, with lush greenery space forming the heart of the project designed with curved pathways blended with the landscape that acts as relaxation, gathering space, yoga and meditation. This space is awash with light for most of the day, courtesy of the open to-sky skylight. The placements were following the Vaastu norms.
